A food chain is a linear sequence of organisms in which each organism feeds on the one before it, transferring food energy step by step from producers to top consumers.

A food chain begins with producers, which fix solar energy into chemical (food) energy through photosynthesis. This energy is then transferred, level by level, as one organism is eaten by the next - each level is called a trophic level - with energy being lost as heat (via respiration) at every transfer, so less energy is available at each successive step (the 10% law).
