Natural selection is Darwin's proposed mechanism of evolution: nature 'selects' individuals whose heritable traits give them a survival/reproductive advantage in their environment, gradually changing the population's traits over generations.

Charles Darwin observed that:

  1. Individuals in a population show heritable variation in their traits.
  2. Populations tend to produce more offspring than the environment can support, leading to a struggle for existence (limited food, space, resources).
