Spermatogenesis and oogenesis are both forms of gametogenesis by meiosis, but differ in location, timing, number of functional gametes produced, and continuity.

Key differences between spermatogenesis (male gamete formation) and oogenesis (female gamete formation):

  1. Site: Spermatogenesis occurs in the seminiferous tubules of the testes. Oogenesis occurs in the ovaries.
  2. Onset and duration: Spermatogenesis begins at puberty and continues throughout a male's reproductive life. Oogenesis begins during foetal development (oogonia formed before birth) but completes only after puberty, and stops permanently at menopause.
  3. Number of functional gametes: One primary spermatocyte produces 4 functional, equal-sized sperm. One primary oocyte produces only 1 functional ovum plus 2-3 small, non-functional polar bodies (due to highly unequal cytoplasmic division).
  4. Continuity: Spermatogenesis is a continuous process producing millions of sperm daily. Oogenesis is a cyclic (typically monthly) process, usually releasing only one egg per menstrual cycle. …
