Each conversion uses a standard named method: mild oxidation of a secondary alcohol to a ketone, the Wurtz coupling of an alkyl halide to a longer alkane, and the Rosenmund reduction of an acid chloride to an aldehyde.

a) Butan-2-ol to Butan-2-one:

Butan-2-ol is a secondary alcohol. Oxidising it with PCC (pyridinium chlorochromate, a mild oxidant) or with acidified potassium dichromate converts the -CH(OH)- group to a ketone -C(=O)-:

CH3CH(OH)CH2CH3 --(PCC or acidified K2Cr2O7)--> CH3COCH2CH3 (butan-2-one)

b) Chloromethane to ethane:

The Wurtz reaction couples two molecules of an alkyl halide using sodium metal in dry ether, forming a new C-C bond and a longer-chain alkane:

2 CH3Cl + 2 Na --(dry ether)--> CH3-CH3 (ethane) + 2 NaCl

c) Benzoyl chloride to benzaldehyde: …
