Drift velocity is the tiny net average velocity superimposed on an electron's random thermal motion by an applied field, and it is directly proportional to the current through I = neAvd.

In a conductor, free electrons are in continuous random thermal motion (with zero net displacement on average) even without an applied field. When an electric field E⃗\vec E is applied, each electron experiences a force −eE⃗-e\vec E between collisions with the lattice ions, which superimposes a small net drift on the random motion. The drift velocity vdv_d is defined as the average velocity acquired by free electrons in a conductor in the direction opposite to the applied electric field (since electrons are negative), due to this field.
