Isotopes share the same proton number, isobars share the same total mass number, and isotones share the same neutron number - each pair differs in the other two nuclear properties.

Isotopes: Nuclei of the same element (same atomic number ZZ, i.e. same number of protons, so identical chemical properties) but with different mass numbers AA (i.e. different numbers of neutrons). Example: 11H^{1}_{1}H (protium, 0 neutrons) and 12H^{2}_{1}H (deuterium, 1 neutron) - both have Z=1Z=1 but different AA.

Isobars: Nuclei of different elements (different atomic number ZZ) that happen to have the same mass number AA (same total number of nucleons). Example: 1840Ar^{40}_{18}Ar (argon, 18 protons, 22 neutrons) and 2040Ca^{40}_{20}Ca (calcium, 20 protons, 20 neutrons) - both have A=40A=40 but different ZZ.
