Optical fibres work because light travelling inside the denser core hits the core-cladding interface at an angle greater than the critical angle and undergoes total internal reflection at every bounce, trapping it inside.

An optical fibre consists of a core made of a denser (higher refractive index) glass/quartz surrounded by a cladding of a rarer (lower refractive index) material. Light is launched into the core at one end at an angle such that, whenever it strikes the core-cladding boundary, its angle of incidence exceeds the critical angle for that interface.
