Apply the thin-lens formula twice in succession (the image from the first lens becomes the object for the second, held in contact) and combine, giving 1/f = 1/f1 + 1/f2.

Consider two thin lenses of focal lengths f1 and f2 placed in contact (co-axially, touching), so their optical centres essentially coincide. Let a point object O be placed on the axis at a distance u from this combination.

For the FIRST lens alone (f1), it forms an image I1 at a distance v1 from it, if there were no second lens. Using the thin-lens formula for lens 1:

1/v1 - 1/u = 1/f1

This image I1 now acts as the object for the SECOND lens (f2), since the lenses are in contact (negligible separation, so I1 is at distance v1 from lens 2 as well). If the final image forms at distance v (from the combination), applying the thin-lens formula to lens 2:

1/v - 1/v1 = 1/f2
