Two 20 cm convex lenses in contact combine to a 10 cm focal length (10 D power).

For thin lenses in contact, the powers (or reciprocals of focal length) add algebraically:

1f=1f1+1f2\dfrac{1}{f} = \dfrac{1}{f_1} + \dfrac{1}{f_2}

With f1=f2=20f_1 = f_2 = 20 cm =0.2= 0.2 m:

1f=120+120=220=110 ⇒ f=10 cm\dfrac{1}{f} = \dfrac{1}{20}+\dfrac{1}{20} = \dfrac{2}{20} = \dfrac{1}{10} \ \Rightarrow\ f = 10\ \text{cm}
