Six strategies for sustainable development: non-conventional energy, LPG/gobar gas in rural areas, CNG in urban transport, wind power, solar power, and mini-hydel plants.

Sustainable development means using resources in a way that satisfies present needs without reducing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The Environment and Sustainable Development chapter of Karnataka 1st PUC Economics suggests the following strategies (explaining any six):

  • Use of non-conventional sources of energy — India depends heavily on polluting fossil fuels like coal and oil. Shifting to clean, renewable sources reduces pollution and conserves exhaustible resources.
  • LPG and gobar (biogas) in rural areas — replacing firewood and dung cakes with LPG and gobar gas plants cuts deforestation and indoor air pollution while providing clean cooking fuel to rural households.
  • CNG in urban areas — using Compressed Natural Gas in public transport (as in Delhi) sharply reduces vehicular air pollution in cities.
  • Wind power — regions with steady winds can generate electricity from windmills, a clean and renewable source with almost no pollution. …
