(a) Sustainable development = meeting present needs without harming future generations' ability to meet theirs. (b) Strategies: non-conventional/renewable energy (solar, wind, mini-hydel), LPG/gobar gas and CNG to cut pollution, wind and solar power, and eco-friendly farming (biocomposting, bio-pest control).

This question is from the Kerala Plus One (DHSE) Economics chapter 'Environment and Sustainable Development'.

(a) What is Sustainable Development? (2)

Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (the definition given by the Brundtland Commission). It means using natural resources and the environment in a way that does not exhaust them or damage the ecosystem, so that both present and future generations can enjoy a good quality of life.

(b) Strategies of Sustainable Development (6):

  • Use of non-conventional (renewable) sources of energy: Depending less on exhaustible fossil fuels (coal, oil) and more on clean, renewable energy that does not pollute.
  • LPG and Gobar gas in rural areas: Replacing firewood and dung cakes with LPG and biogas (gobar gas) plants reduces deforestation and indoor air pollution.
  • CNG in urban areas: Using Compressed Natural Gas in vehicles greatly reduces urban air pollution compared with petrol and diesel.
  • Wind power: Setting up windmills in windy regions provides clean electricity without harming the environment.
  • Solar power: Using photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into electricity is a clean and abundant energy source, well suited to a tropical country like India. …
