Plot years on the X-axis and value (₹100 crores) on the Y-axis; draw one line for exports and one for imports. Both rise, but imports stay above exports and the gap widens — a growing trade deficit. (Blind alt: six diagrams — simple bar, multiple bar, sub-divided bar, pie, histogram, frequency polygon.)

Main part — Arithmetic line graph (time-series graph):

Given data (value in ₹100 crores):

Year2009-102010-112011-122012-132013-14
Exports845511370146601634319050
Imports1363716835234552669227154

How to draw it:

  1. Take the years (2009-10, 2010-11, … 2013-14) on the horizontal X-axis at equal spacing.
  2. Take the value in ₹100 crores on the vertical Y-axis, choosing a suitable scale that covers up to about 28,000.
  3. For Exports, plot the point above each year at its value (8455, 11370, 14660, 16343, 19050) and join these points in order with straight lines — this is the exports line.
  4. For Imports, plot the point above each year at its value (13637, 16835, 23455, 26692, 27154) and join these points — this is the imports line.
  5. Use two different colours / line styles and give an index (legend) so the two lines can be told apart. …
