It promotes sustainability by conserving soil and environment, giving healthier chemical-free food, lowering input costs and creating rural employment.
What organic farming is
Organic farming is a whole system of farming that restores, maintains and enhances the ecological balance. It relies on natural inputs and completely avoids the use of synthetic chemicals such as chemical fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides and other agro-chemicals.
Instead it uses:
- Organic manure, compost and green manure for nutrients.
- Crop rotation and mixed cropping to maintain soil fertility.
- Biofertilisers and biological (natural) pest control in place of chemical pesticides.
How it promotes sustainable development
- Conserves soil fertility — by using organic manure it sustains and enhances the fertility of the soil over the long term, unlike chemical farming which degrades it.
- Environment friendly — it keeps the soil, water and air free from chemical pollution, maintaining ecological balance.
- Healthier food — organic produce is free of chemicals and more nutritious, so it is healthier for consumers, and it fetches a premium price.
- Cheaper, locally available inputs — because it uses local, natural inputs, it is less costly, which benefits small and marginal farmers.
- More employment — organic farming requires more labour than chemical farming, so it generates more rural employment, especially in a labour-abundant country like India. …
