Fit India Movement

The Fit India Movement was introduced on 29 August 2019 (National Sports Day, marking the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand) by the Prime Minister, with the objective of making fitness an integral part of our lives. Its mission is to bring about positive behavioural change and to help people adopt a physically active, healthy lifestyle.

Where Khelo India focuses on building sporting talent and culture, Fit India focuses on the everyday fitness of the whole population — its message is that fitness is not only for sportspersons but for everyone, every day. Modern life has become increasingly sedentary because of desk jobs, long screen time and motorised transport, which raises the risk of lifestyle diseases such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease; the movement was launched specifically to reverse this trend by making daily physical activity a mass, voluntary habit rather than something imposed from outside.

Objectives of the Fit India Movement

To achieve its mission, Fit India undertakes various initiatives and events with the following objectives:

  • To promote fitness as easy, fun and free.
  • To spread awareness on fitness and the physical activities that promote it, through focused campaigns.
  • To encourage indigenous sports.
  • To make fitness reach every school, college/university, panchayat and village.
  • To create a platform for citizens of India to share information, drive awareness and encourage sharing of personal fitness stories.
