The skeleton supports, protects, moves, makes blood cells and stores minerals — and every one of these underpins athletic performance.

The skeletal system is the bony framework of the body. Its main functions, each closely tied to physical activity, are:

  1. Support and shape — the skeleton gives the body its structure and holds it upright. In sport: good bony support and posture are the base for balance and stable, efficient technique.

  2. Protection of internal organs — bones shield vital organs (the skull guards the brain, the rib cage the heart and lungs). In sport: this protection is vital in contact and high-impact games where blows to the body are common.

  3. Movement (bones as levers) — bones act as levers at the joints; when muscles pull on them, movement is produced. In sport: every running, throwing, jumping and kicking action depends on these bone–muscle lever systems, and longer levers can generate greater speed and force.

  4. Production of blood cells — the red bone marrow produces red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. In sport: red blood cells carry the oxygen that working muscles need for endurance, so this function directly supports aerobic performance. …
