Current account components: (1) goods trade, (2) services (invisibles), (3) net income from abroad, (4) net current transfers.

The current account records all transactions relating to the flow of goods, services, incomes and transfers between a country and the rest of the world. Its components can be charted as follows:

  • 1. Trade in goods (visible items) — exports and imports of physical goods; the difference is the balance of trade.
  • 2. Trade in services (invisible items) — exports and imports of services such as shipping, banking, insurance, tourism and software.
  • 3. Net income from abroad — income (interest, profit, dividends) earned by residents from abroad minus similar income paid to foreigners; also compensation of employees.
  • 4. Net current transfers — one-sided transfers such as gifts, remittances, donations and grants received from abroad minus those sent abroad.
