The Balance of Payments is a systematic record of all economic transactions between a country and the rest of the world in a year, divided into the Current Account (goods, services, income, transfers) and the Capital Account (capital/financial flows and reserves); the overall BoP always balances.

The Balance of Payments (BoP) is a systematic statement of all economic transactions between the residents of a country and the rest of the world during a given period (usually a year). Receipts from foreigners are recorded as credits (+) and payments to foreigners as debits (-). It has two main accounts:

1. Current Account - records transactions in goods, services, income and current transfers:

  • Visible trade - exports and imports of goods (the balance of trade).
  • Invisible trade - exports and imports of services such as shipping, banking, insurance and tourism.
  • Income - net earnings from investments and compensation of employees abroad.
  • Unilateral (current) transfers - gifts, remittances, grants received or given with nothing in return.

2. Capital Account - records transactions that affect a country's assets and liabilities with the rest of the world:

  • Foreign investment - foreign direct investment and portfolio investment (inflows and outflows).
  • Loans and borrowings - external commercial borrowings, loans to/from abroad.
  • Banking capital and changes in official foreign exchange reserves - the reserves held by the central bank act as the balancing item. …
