Indifference curves: slope downward, are convex to the origin, a higher curve means more satisfaction, and they never cut each other.

An indifference curve is a curve showing all combinations of two goods that give the consumer the same level of satisfaction. Its main features (Karnataka 2nd PUC) are:

1. Indifference curves slope downward (negative slope): To keep satisfaction the same, if the consumer takes more of one good he must give up some of the other. So the curve slopes downward from left to right.

 |__________\___ Good 1

2. Indifference curves are convex to the origin: This is because of the diminishing marginal rate of substitution (MRS) — as the consumer gets more of Good 1, he is willing to give up less and less of Good 2 for each additional unit of Good 1, giving the curve its convex (bowed-in) shape.

3. A higher indifference curve represents a higher level of satisfaction: A curve farther from the origin contains more of both goods, so (by monotonic preferences) it gives greater satisfaction.
