Alien (exotic) species introduced into a new area often turn invasive, outcompeting or preying on native species and driving them to decline/extinction. Three examples: Nile perch → cichlids of Lake Victoria; water hyacinth (Eichhornia); African catfish (Clarias gariepinus).

Concept. Alien species invasion is one of the major causes of biodiversity loss (the 'Evil Quartet': habitat loss, over-exploitation, alien species invasion, and co-extinctions). When a species is introduced — intentionally or unintentionally — into a region where it has no natural predators or competitors, it can multiply unchecked and become invasive, harming or eliminating the native (indigenous) species.

Three examples justifying the statement:

  1. Nile perch in Lake Victoria (East Africa): the Nile perch, introduced into the lake, led to the extinction of more than 200 species of native cichlid fish — a classic case of alien-species-driven extinction.
  2. Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes, the 'terror of Bengal'): this introduced ornamental aquatic weed grows rapidly, covers water bodies, drastically lowers dissolved oxygen, and causes the death of many native aquatic plants and animals. …
