A retrovirus injects its RNA into the host cell; reverse transcriptase converts it to DNA; the DNA integrates into host DNA and produces progeny viruses using the host's machinery.

Diagrammatic representation of the replication of retrovirus (HIV) inside an animal cell.
Diagrammatic representation of the replication of retrovirus (HIV) inside an animal cell.

Concept. A retrovirus (such as HIV) is an RNA virus that carries the enzyme reverse transcriptase, which reverses the normal flow of information (RNA → DNA).

Steps of replication (to be shown in the diagram):

  1. Attachment and entry — the virus binds to a receptor (e.g. CD4 on a helper T-lymphocyte / macrophage) and enters the cell.
  2. Release of RNA — the virus releases its RNA genome and reverse transcriptase into the cytoplasm.
  3. Reverse transcription — reverse transcriptase synthesises a viral DNA copy using the viral RNA as a template.
  4. Integration — the viral DNA is incorporated into the host cell's DNA to form a provirus.
  5. Transcription and translation — the proviral DNA directs the host machinery to produce new viral RNA and viral proteins. …
