Contact inhibition stops normal cells dividing on contact (lost in cancer cells); metastasis is the spread of malignant cells to distant sites; cancer is treated by surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

a) Definitions (2 marks):

  • Contact inhibition: In normal cells, contact with other (neighbouring) cells inhibits their uncontrolled growth and division. This property is called contact inhibition. Cancer cells lose contact inhibition, so they continue to divide, pile up and form a mass of cells called a tumour.

  • Metastasis: The property by which cells sloughed from a malignant tumour reach distant sites through the blood and lymph, and wherever they lodge they start a new (secondary) tumour. This spread of cancer cells to distant parts of the body is called metastasis. It is the most feared property of malignant tumours.

b) Treatment of cancer (3 marks):

Cancer is generally treated by a combination of the following approaches:

  1. Surgery: Physical removal of the tumour.

  2. Radiation therapy (radiotherapy): Tumour cells are irradiated lethally with radiation (e.g. gamma rays), taking proper care of the surrounding normal tissues.

  3. Chemotherapy: Several chemotherapeutic drugs are used to kill the cancerous cells. Some of these are specific for particular tumours. Many drugs have side effects such as hair loss, anaemia, etc. …
