Cancer is a disease of uncontrolled, unregulated cell division producing a malignant tumour that invades and spreads (metastasis); it is caused by carcinogens (radiation, chemicals, oncogenic viruses/oncogenes) and diagnosed by biopsy, blood tests, imaging (CT/MRI) and molecular/antibody techniques.

What is cancer?

Normal cells show contact inhibition — they stop dividing on contact with other cells. In cancer, cells lose this control and undergo uncontrolled, unregulated (neoplastic) division, forming a mass of cells called a tumour.

  • Benign tumour — remains confined (localised), usually harmless.
  • Malignant tumour — grows rapidly, invades surrounding tissues, and cells break away and spread through the blood to distant sites, starting new tumours — this spread is called metastasis. These cells also starve the normal cells by competing for nutrients.

Causes of cancer (carcinogenic agents):

  1. Physical carcinogens — ionising radiations (X-rays, gamma rays) and non-ionising radiations (UV) that damage/mutate DNA.
  2. Chemical carcinogens — chemicals such as those in tobacco smoke (a major cause of lung and throat cancer).
  3. Biological carcinogens — oncogenic viruses carrying viral oncogenes; also cellular oncogenes (proto-oncogenes) in normal cells that, when activated, transform a cell into a cancerous one.

Diagnosis (detection) of cancer:

  1. Biopsy and histopathological study — a piece of the suspected tissue is examined under the microscope.
  2. Blood/bone-marrow tests — for leukaemias (increased cell counts). …
