The placenta connects the foetus to the mother for exchange of materials and also secretes hormones like hCG, hPL, estrogen and progesterone.

Placenta: After implantation, finger-like projections (chorionic villi) of the embryo grow into the uterine tissue. Together with the maternal uterine tissue, they form a structural and functional unit called the placenta. It connects the developing foetus to the mother's uterine wall through the umbilical cord and facilitates the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the foetus and the removal of carbon dioxide and excretory wastes.

Besides its role in exchange, the placenta acts as an endocrine (temporary) gland.
