(b) Uses: forensic (criminal) identification and paternity testing.
Concept. DNA fingerprinting identifies differences at specific regions of DNA called repetitive DNA. A key class is the VNTR (Variable Number of Tandem Repeats) — a small stretch of DNA repeated many times in tandem, belonging to a type of satellite DNA (minisatellite).
(a) Role of VNTR in DNA fingerprinting. The number of copies of the repeat unit in a VNTR varies greatly from individual to individual (it is highly polymorphic), while being inherited from parents. Because of this variation, the size of the VNTR differs among people, producing a unique pattern of bands on a Southern blot / autoradiogram. The only exception is identical twins. This individual-specific banding pattern is what makes DNA fingerprinting possible.
