The genetic code is triplet, degenerate, unambiguous/specific, nearly universal, and non-overlapping/comma-less with start and stop codons.

Five salient features of the genetic code:

  1. Triplet nature – The code is read in groups of three nucleotides. Each codon consists of three bases and specifies one amino acid. There are 64 codons in all (4³).

  2. Degeneracy – The genetic code is degenerate; i.e., more than one codon can code for the same amino acid (e.g., leucine, serine and arginine are each coded by six codons). Only methionine and tryptophan are coded by a single codon each.

  3. Unambiguous and specific – One codon codes for only one particular amino acid and no other; the code is not ambiguous.

  4. Universality – The code is nearly universal; a particular codon codes for the same amino acid in almost all organisms, from bacteria to humans (with a few exceptions in mitochondria). …
