Infertility = inability of a couple to conceive naturally despite unprotected cohabitation (for ~2 years). Two ARTs: IVF–ET (test-tube baby) and GIFT (Gamete Intra-Fallopian Transfer) (others: ZIFT, ICSI, IUI).

Definition. Infertility is the inability of a couple to produce children even after 1–2 years of unprotected sexual cohabitation. The cause may lie in the male, the female or both, and may be physical, congenital, immunological or psychological.

Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). ARTs are special techniques that assist couples to have children.

  1. IVF–ET (In Vitro Fertilisation and Embryo Transfer, 'test-tube baby'): ova collected from the female and sperms from the male are fused in vitro under laboratory conditions to form a zygote. The zygote or early embryo (up to 8 blastomeres — ZIFT) is transferred into the fallopian tube, or an embryo of >8 blastomeres is transferred into the uterus (IUT) to complete development. …
