Pollen-pistil interaction is a dynamic, recognition-based dialogue: a compatible pollen is accepted and its tube is helped to reach the ovule, whereas an incompatible pollen is recognised and rejected.

Pollen-pistil interaction refers to all the events that occur from the deposition of pollen on the stigma until the pollen tube enters the ovule. It is a dynamic process because the pistil has the ability to recognise the pollen and then either promote or inhibit its further development, ensuring that only the right (compatible) pollen succeeds.

1. Recognition (acceptance or rejection): Following pollination, chemical components of the pollen interact with those of the pistil (a chemical dialogue). Through this recognition the pistil distinguishes the compatible (right) pollen from incompatible (wrong) pollen.

2. Promotion of compatible pollen: If the pollen is compatible, the pistil accepts it and promotes post-pollination events:

  • The pollen grain germinates on the stigma to produce a pollen tube.
  • The pollen tube grows through the tissues of the stigma and style (getting nutrients from them).
  • It reaches the ovary, enters the ovule through the micropyle, and then enters the embryo sac to release the two male gametes for double fertilisation. …
