Phenol is made industrially from cumene via cumene hydroperoxide (giving phenol + acetone); phenol + Zn gives benzene; and methoxymethane is made by Williamson synthesis of sodium methoxide with methyl iodide.

a) Cumene process (manufacture of phenol)

Step 1 — Cumene (isopropylbenzene) is oxidised by air (O2_2) to cumene hydroperoxide:

C6H5CH(CH3)2+O2→C6H5C(CH3)2-O-O-H\text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{CH(CH}_3)_2 + \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{C(CH}_3)_2\text{-O-O-H}

Step 2 — The hydroperoxide is treated with dilute acid to give phenol and acetone:

C6H5C(CH3)2-O-O-H→H3O+C6H5OH+(CH3)2C=O\text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{C(CH}_3)_2\text{-O-O-H} \xrightarrow{\text{H}_3\text{O}^+} \text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{OH} + (\text{CH}_3)_2\text{C=O}

(phenol + acetone as by-product)

b) Reduction of phenol with zinc dust (removal of the OH\text{OH} group):

C6H5OH+Zn⟶C6H6+ZnO\text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{OH} + \text{Zn} \longrightarrow \text{C}_6\text{H}_6 + \text{ZnO}

(benzene is formed)

c) Williamson synthesis of methoxymethane (dimethyl ether) …
