Williamson's synthesis is the standard laboratory method for making ethers: a metal alkoxide displaces a halide from an alkyl halide via SN2 substitution.

In Williamson's synthesis, a sodium (or potassium) alkoxide, prepared by reacting an alcohol with sodium metal, is treated with a suitable alkyl halide (preferably primary, to favour SN2 over elimination). The alkoxide oxygen (a good nucleophile) displaces the halide ion in a bimolecular nucleophilic substitution (SN2), forming an ether:

R−O−Na++R′−X→R−O−R′+NaXR-O^-Na^+ + R'-X \rightarrow R-O-R' + NaX
