Gabriel phthalimide synthesis converts phthalimide, via its potassium salt and methylation, into methanamine on hydrolysis; benzenediazonium chloride couples with phenol at the para position to give the orange azo dye p-hydroxyazobenzene.

a) Gabriel phthalimide synthesis of methanamine

Step 1 — Phthalimide is treated with KOH to give potassium phthalimide:

Phthalimide (C6H4(CO)2NH)+KOH→C6H4(CO)2N−K++H2O\text{Phthalimide (}\text{C}_6\text{H}_4(\text{CO})_2\text{NH}) + \text{KOH} \rightarrow \text{C}_6\text{H}_4(\text{CO})_2\text{N}^-\text{K}^+ + \text{H}_2\text{O}

Step 2 — The potassium salt reacts with methyl iodide (SN2S_N2) to give N-methylphthalimide:

C6H4(CO)2N−K++CH3I→C6H4(CO)2N-CH3+KI\text{C}_6\text{H}_4(\text{CO})_2\text{N}^-\text{K}^+ + \text{CH}_3\text{I} \rightarrow \text{C}_6\text{H}_4(\text{CO})_2\text{N-CH}_3 + \text{KI}

Step 3 — Alkaline hydrolysis (or hydrazinolysis) releases the primary amine:

C6H4(CO)2N-CH3→hydrolysisNaOHC6H4(COO−)2+CH3NH2\text{C}_6\text{H}_4(\text{CO})_2\text{N-CH}_3 \xrightarrow[\text{hydrolysis}]{\text{NaOH}} \text{C}_6\text{H}_4(\text{COO}^-)_2 + \text{CH}_3\text{NH}_2

(product = methanamine, CH3NH2\text{CH}_3\text{NH}_2)

b) Coupling of benzenediazonium chloride with phenol

In mildly alkaline medium, the diazonium ion acts as an electrophile and couples at the para position of phenol to form an azo compound (an orange dye): …
