Concept. Amino acids contain both an acidic carboxyl group (–COOH) and a basic amino group (–NH2NH_2). In the solid state and in aqueous solution (near neutral pH), an internal acid–base reaction occurs: the –COOH transfers its proton to the –NH2NH_2 of the same molecule. The result is a zwitterion (dipolar ion) that is overall neutral but carries both a positive and a negative charge.
