A secondary cell is a rechargeable cell whose reactions are reversible; on discharge the lead battery oxidises Pb to PbSO₄ at the anode and reduces PbO₂ to PbSO₄ at the cathode.

Secondary cell: A secondary cell (storage cell) is a galvanic cell that can be recharged. After the cell has discharged (produced current), it can be recharged by passing a direct current through it in the opposite direction, which reverses the cell reactions and regenerates the original active materials. Thus it can be used through many charge–discharge cycles (e.g. lead storage battery, nickel–cadmium cell).

Lead storage battery — reactions during discharging: The anode is spongy lead (Pb), the cathode is lead dioxide (PbO2\text{PbO}_2), and the electrolyte is ~38% sulphuric acid.

At the anode (oxidation):

Pb(s)+SO42−(aq)→PbSO4(s)+2e−\text{Pb(s)} + \text{SO}_4^{2-}\text{(aq)} \rightarrow \text{PbSO}_4\text{(s)} + 2e^-

At the cathode (reduction):

PbO2(s)+SO42−(aq)+4H+(aq)+2e−→PbSO4(s)+2H2O(l)\text{PbO}_2\text{(s)} + \text{SO}_4^{2-}\text{(aq)} + 4\text{H}^+\text{(aq)} + 2e^- \rightarrow \text{PbSO}_4\text{(s)} + 2\text{H}_2\text{O(l)}
