A primary battery is a non-rechargeable galvanic cell whose reaction runs only once; a common example is the dry cell (Leclanche cell).

A battery is one or more electrochemical cells that convert chemical energy into electrical energy through spontaneous redox reactions.

Batteries are of two broad kinds:

  • Primary batteries: the cell reaction occurs only once. After the active materials are consumed the cell cannot be regenerated by passing current through it (it is non-rechargeable) and must be discarded.
  • Secondary batteries: can be recharged by passing current in the reverse direction (e.g. lead storage battery, Ni-Cd cell).
