Alcoholic KOH removes HX from a haloalkane (dehydrohalogenation) to give an alkene.

Concept. Dehydrohalogenation (a β\beta-elimination) removes a hydrogen halide from a haloalkane to form an alkene. It requires a strong base in an alcoholic medium.
