SN2 converts CH₃Cl to CH₃OH in one concerted, backside step with second-order kinetics; a racemic mixture is a 50:50, optically inactive mixture of the two enantiomers, e.g. (±)-butan-2-ol.

(a) SN2S_N2 mechanism: chloromethane → methanol.

The hydroxide ion OH−\text{OH}^- (nucleophile) attacks the electrophilic carbon of CH3Cl\text{CH}_3\text{Cl} from the side directly opposite to the leaving chlorine (backside attack). Bond formation (C–OH) and bond breaking (C–Cl) occur simultaneously in a single step, passing through a transition state in which carbon is partially bonded to both OH\text{OH} and Cl\text{Cl} and the three H atoms lie in a plane:

HO−+CH3-Cl→[HO⋯CH3⋯Cl]‡→CH3-OH+Cl−\text{HO}^- + \text{CH}_3\text{-Cl} \rightarrow \left[\text{HO}\cdots\text{CH}_3\cdots\text{Cl}\right]^{\ddagger} \rightarrow \text{CH}_3\text{-OH} + \text{Cl}^-

Because the rate depends on the concentration of both the substrate and the nucleophile:

Rate=k[CH3Cl][OH−]\text{Rate} = k[\text{CH}_3\text{Cl}][\text{OH}^-]

it is bimolecular and the reaction is of order = 2 (second order).

(b) Racemic mixture.

A racemic mixture (racemate) is a mixture containing the two enantiomers of a chiral compound in equal (1:1) amounts. The rotation of plane-polarised light by one enantiomer (+) is exactly cancelled by the equal and opposite rotation of the other (−), so the mixture is optically inactive — this is called external compensation. It is denoted (±) or (dl). …
