(a) Transition metals catalyse reactions through variable oxidation states and by adsorbing reactants on their surface. (b) Scandium (or zinc) shows only one oxidation state.

  1. Variable oxidation states. Transition metals can readily change oxidation state, so they can accept and donate electrons and form unstable intermediate compounds/complexes with reactants, providing an alternative low-energy path (e.g. V2O5V_2O_5 in the Contact process, FeFe in the Haber process).
  2. Adsorption on surface / free valencies. The metal surface has free valencies that adsorb reactant molecules, increasing their concentration at the surface and weakening their bonds, thus lowering the activation energy. …
