Drift velocity is the small, steady average velocity that free electrons gain in the direction opposite to the applied field, on top of their random thermal motion.

Concept: In the absence of a field, free electrons in a metal move randomly with high thermal speeds, so their average velocity is zero. When a field E⃗\vec{E} is applied, each electron feels a force −eE⃗-e\vec{E} and accelerates between collisions, giving a net average drift.
