Resistivity ρ\rho is the resistance of a unit-length, unit-area sample of a material; it depends only on the material (and temperature), not on the specimen's dimensions.

Concept. The resistance of a conductor depends on its length LL, cross-sectional area AA and the material through R=ρLAR = \rho\dfrac{L}{A}. The material factor is the resistivity ρ\rho.

Definition. Rearranging, ρ=RAL\rho = \dfrac{RA}{L}. If L=1 mL = 1\ \text{m} and A=1 m2A = 1\ \text{m}^2, then ρ=R\rho = R — hence resistivity is the resistance of a conductor of unit length and unit cross-sectional area.
