AC generator principle = electromagnetic induction (rotating coil in a magnetic field induces emf). The current reverses direction each half-cycle, hence 'alternating'.

Working principle: An AC generator works on the principle of electromagnetic induction. When a coil (armature) is rotated with uniform angular speed in a uniform magnetic field, the magnetic flux linked with the coil changes continuously with time. By Faraday's law this changing flux induces an emf in the coil:
