An AC generator works on electromagnetic induction: a coil rotating in a magnetic field has continuously changing flux, inducing a sinusoidal emf ε=NBAωsin⁡(ωt)\varepsilon = NBA\omega\sin(\omega t).

An AC generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Its principle is electromagnetic induction (Faraday's law): when a coil is rotated in a uniform magnetic field, the magnetic flux linked with it changes continuously with time, and hence an emf is induced across its ends.

For a coil of NN turns and area AA rotating with angular velocity ω\omega in a uniform magnetic field BB, the flux at time tt is

ϕ=NBAcos⁡(ωt)\phi = NBA\cos(\omega t)

The induced emf is

ε=−dϕdt=NBAωsin⁡(ωt)\varepsilon = -\dfrac{d\phi}{dt} = NBA\omega\sin(\omega t) …
