Displacement current is the current due to a changing electric field, Id=ε0 dΦE/dtI_d = \varepsilon_0\, d\Phi_E/dt; it makes Ampère's law consistent (e.g. in a charging capacitor).

Maxwell showed that a changing electric field produces a magnetic field just as a conduction current does. The current associated with such a time-varying electric field is called the displacement current.
