A free proton cannot decay to a neutron because mn>mpm_n > m_p; only the binding energy available inside a nucleus makes the process energetically allowed.

Concept: The decay p→n+e++νp \to n + e^+ + \nu increases the rest mass (neutron mass >> proton mass). Energy conservation forbids a spontaneous mass-increasing decay for an isolated (free) proton.
