The Journal Proper records transactions that have no special book of their own — e.g. opening entries and credit purchase of a fixed asset.

When a business keeps subsidiary (special-purpose) books, most routine transactions go into them. Transactions that do not belong to any subsidiary book are entered in the Journal Proper. Any two acceptable examples:

Transaction through Journal ProperWhy
Opening entryRecords the opening balances of assets, liabilities and capital at the beginning of the year
Credit purchase/sale of a fixed assetPurchases/Sales books are only for goods, not assets like machinery or furniture
Adjusting entriese.g. outstanding/prepaid expenses, depreciation at year end
