Dicot leaf mesophyll = palisade + spongy parenchyma; dicot leaves are dorsiventral with reticulate venation, monocot leaves are isobilateral with undifferentiated mesophyll and parallel venation.

a) Between the upper and lower epidermis lies the mesophyll, made of chloroplast-containing (chlorenchyma) cells. In a dicot leaf the mesophyll is differentiated into two types:

  • Palisade parenchyma: elongated, closely packed cells arranged vertically just below the upper epidermis (rich in chloroplasts, main site of photosynthesis).
  • Spongy parenchyma: irregular, loosely arranged cells with large intercellular air spaces, towards the lower epidermis (aid in gas exchange).

b) Differences between a dicot leaf and a monocot leaf:

  • Symmetry and mesophyll: A dicot leaf is dorsiventral - its mesophyll is differentiated into palisade and spongy tissue. A monocot leaf is isobilateral - its mesophyll is not differentiated (uniform). …
