Prophase I of meiosis is the longest and most eventful phase of meiotic division, and is itself divided into five sub-stages: Leptotene, Zygotene, Pachytene, Diplotene, and Diakinesis.

  • Zygotene: homologous chromosomes begin pairing together, a process called synapsis. The paired chromosomes are called bivalents/tetrads, and a protein structure called the synaptonemal complex forms between them.
