Prophase I of meiosis I is long and complex, and is traditionally divided into five sub-stages: Leptotene, Zygotene, Pachytene, Diplotene and Diakinesis.
- (a) Zygotene: Homologous chromosomes begin pairing with each other, a process called synapsis; the paired chromosomes are called bivalents/tetrads, and a proteinaceous structure called the synaptonemal complex forms between the paired homologues.
- (b) Pachytene: The bivalent chromosomes show clearly as pairs of sister chromatids (tetrads). Crossing over — exchange of genetic material between non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes — occurs at this stage, mediated by the enzyme recombinase, and is completed by the end of pachytene. …
