Crossing over occurs during pachytene of Prophase I of meiosis; its significance is that it generates new combinations of genes (recombinants), increasing genetic variation.

(a) Prophase I of meiosis is divided into five sub-stages: Leptotene, Zygotene, Pachytene, Diplotene and Diakinesis. During pachytene, the synapsed homologous chromosomes (bivalents) show recombination nodules, at which crossing over — the exchange of genetic material between non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes — takes place, mediated by the enzyme complex including recombinase.
