Crossing over is the reciprocal exchange of chromosomal segments between non-sister chromatids of paired homologous chromosomes, occurring during pachytene of meiotic prophase I, and it is the main source of genetic recombination.

During meiotic prophase I, the process unfolds in five sub-stages: leptotene, zygotene, pachytene, diplotene, and diakinesis.

  • In zygotene, homologous chromosomes pair up closely (synapsis) to form a bivalent/tetrad (since each chromosome already has 2 sister chromatids after S-phase replication).
