ATP is called the energy currency because, like money, it is a common medium the cell uses to "pay for" any energy-requiring activity.

Living organisms constantly need energy for basic life activities — absorption, transport, movement, reproduction, and even the mechanics of breathing. This energy comes from the oxidation of food, but that energy cannot be used directly the moment it is released; it first has to be captured in a form the cell can carry around and spend as required.

That is exactly the role "energy currency" describes. During respiration, the energy released in the many small, enzyme-controlled steps of oxidation is trapped as chemical energy in a molecule that:

  • Can be synthesised wherever oxidation is occurring, whether in glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, or the electron transport system.
  • Can be transported to, and used at, any site in the cell that needs energy.
