RQ = volume of CO2 evolved / volume of O2 consumed; substrates include carbohydrates and fats.

(a) The Respiratory Quotient (RQ) or respiratory ratio is defined as the ratio of the volume of carbon dioxide evolved to the volume of oxygen consumed in respiration over the same period:

RQ = volume of CO2 released / volume of O2 absorbed.

Its value depends on the substrate: it is 1 for carbohydrates, less than 1 for fats (about 0.7) and for proteins, and more than 1 (or infinite) for organic acids / anaerobic respiration.
